What timber do you use?

We use several varieties of timber with the main types being Camphor Laurel, Australian Red Cedar and Norfolk Pine. We have also crafted exquisite pieces from White Cedar, Silky Oak, Mahogany and Spotted Gum. All our timber is from sustainable sources.

What do you mean by saying your timber is from sustainable sources?

We use dead or rescued trees. Sources of dead trees include lighting struck or damaged trees. Additionally, Camphor Laurel has long been planted in suburbia for all the wrong reasons and is now being removed. We collect the logs, mill, rack, dry and craft them into the finished products we are proud to call Hunter Valley’s Wooden Boards.

Will my board look like the picture on the website?

The size and weight is adhered to, however all boards and platters are hand crafted with each piece created individually. Thus, the specific grain and colouration of the different trees is expressed in the final product. This being the case, slight variations will always exist. Additionally, custom made items are a major part of our business, and obviously, we could not feature all of these on our website. We are happy to show you physical samples if required for large orders.

Which type of timber should I choose?

There is no “right” or “wrong” here! It comes down to personal taste. Laurel Camphor is heavier and denser than the lighter Red Cedar or Norfolk pine. Colours vary between the different types of timber from nearly white, through deep red to darkest brown. We are happy to advise and help with your choice.

How should I care for my board?

Proper care will ensure years of enjoyment and the durability of your Hunter Valley board! An occasional wipe-over with a light vegetable oil (such as Canola) is all that is required to revitalize your platter/board. Simply wipe down with an oil soaked paper towel and leave overnight (the sink is a good place for this!). In the morning, wipe off any oily remnants and your board is now back in service!

Can you do custom designs?

We certainly can! Our team of professional is at your service to create the perfect product for your custom needs. We are happy to advise with wood types and finishes. No job is too big. We have created everything from side plates to table tops, from sushi boards to serving platters…

How long will they last?

Following our care instructions, your Hunter Valley pieces will last for decades! The care instructions are simple:

Wipe down, never soak (or dish wash!)
Mild detergent only, and wipe dry ASAP
Obviously, don’t “smash” them about…
Lightly oil whenever dry or “unconditioned”

That’s it!
